Secret walks in Bruges
Are you a real hiker making a trip to Bruges. Bruges and boroughs have some very nice secret walks. Get to know Bruges in a different way and put on your walking shoes. Below you will find some walking routes in the middle of the historic center! Fun, fun, fun!
The vests
The first secret walks is very calming. Bruges is surrounded by water. With this water belong the fortresses. Walk along the water on the beautiful hiking trails around Bruges. This walking route takes you along some of the major gates of Bruges. The vests provide a green belt around Bruges. On this walking route there are not many people so enjoy the peace and quiet among the locals.
Canals of Bruges
Throughout brugge, many waters flow. It is therefore also fun to see where all these waters flow to. Follow all the small canals through Bruges and get to know the city inside and out. Do you prefer to visit the city on the canals? It is possible to take a boat trip on a part of the canals of Bruges.
Smedenpoort
The lost corner of Bruges, just behind the sand you have the smedenquarter. This is a part of Bruges that is almost never visited by tourists. Here you will find the “smedenpoort” and the “visartpark”. In the “visartpark” you can walk to your heart’s content or let the children play. Does your son or daughter have a bike or scooter? In the “visartpark” there is a whole mini car track to drive with the bike or scooter.
Canals by night
As mentioned earlier, Bruges has infinite canals. If you visit Bruges in winter, the walkways are often very pleasantly lit. To then walk along the canals is very beautiful! Do you come during the Christmas period? Then “Wintergloed” is highly recommended. Throughout the city there is a whole light track mapped out. Winter Glow is currently taking place until January 9, 2022. The route starts at the railway station in Bruges.
Gatewalk
Bruges is a medieval city so has water and gates to protect their city.Bruges has 7 major gates: “donkey gate”, “forge gate”, “Boeverie gate”, “katelijne gate”, “Gent gate”, “Kruispoort” and “Dam gate”. Some of the gates have already been demolished and are just a bridge but the locals still call them gates. The gates that do still exist are imposing and large. You can only visit the “gentpoort”. Inside you will find a real museum. You can visit “Gentpoort” during the weekend from 9:30-12:30 and from 13:30-17:00.
Jan Van Eyck route
This route starts in the district Assebroek so if you are staying in one of the YouStay accommodations in Assebroek then this is the perfect route. You start in the heart of Assebroek and enter the old city through the “Gentpoort”. The highlights you pass include “the Basilica of the Holy Blood”, the market, the beguinage and to finish the beautiful Jan Van Eyck square. On it you will find a statue of the Flemish primitives. And to quench your thirst after this beautiful walk, drink one at the Jan Van Eyck square.
