Carrefour
In the historic center you have 3 carrefour markets. These are small supermarkets where you can buy all the necessities. Do not expect anything too specific but you can find all the ingredients you might need on a daily basis. You can find a Carrefour in the zuidzandstraat, at the beginning of the shopping street. Another one in the side street of the market and the last one you will find on the station square.
Colruyt
If you are staying at the YouStay residence in Assebroek, the nearest store is the “Colruyt”. The “Colruyt” is one of the larger supermarkets just outside the city. That is why it is often very busy there. Would you like to store at a quieter time? The Friday evening the store is open until 21h. Often it is then the quietest. You can find just about anything in this store!
Delhaize
The Delhaize is completely the same as the carrefour and colruyt. This is a small supermarket right on the shopping street. Just like the carrefour, this is a small version. So here you can find all the daily necessities for cooking.
MediMarket & Kruidvat
Groceries can be not only food items but also hygiene or medical items. Therefore, we have added them to the list. For medical items such as cough syrup on throat pastilles or other non-prescription medications, you can visit MediMarket. MediMarket is located in the middle of the market.
For hygiene products such as soap, toothpaste, band-aids,… You can best go to “the kruidvat”. This is a kind of drugstore. Here you will find everything you could possibly need.
Panos
You can find the panos in most belgian stations. It is a pastry store where you can buy sandwiches and butter cookies. Many students buy their sandwiches there before commuting to school. The panos are not only found in the station but also in the city. So looking for tasty butter cookies to start your day? Panos is the place to be.
To the market
You can buy most fresh groceries at the market. The market is available almost every day. On Wednesdays you will find the food market from 8am to 12pm on ‘t sand. Saturday is the big market there. The large market occupies the beursplein and ‘t zand. Here you will find not only food but also textiles and other items. Fish and other fish preparations can be found from Wednesday to Saturday, from 8 am to 1 pm at the fish market.
